Carrying out my GAME plan

In order to carry out my GAME plan I need to have access to more technology and become more familiar with lessons involving technology. In order to design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity I will need to work closely with our technology coordinator. She will be my best resource at knowing what all technology tools we have in our school. The other contact that I would use to help me would be our Media specialist. She knows of great books that go with different standards and incorporates our GPS (Georgia Performance Standards). She would also be able to teach me how to use the different technology tools.

So far, I have been able to check out from our Technology Coordinator a "Slate Board" which is an interactive board that the students can use to project their information onto the big board. I like to think of it as a mini smart board. It has been a great tool not only to get them engaged and motivated, but it keeps them quiet because they all want a turn. My next step is having a Mimio bar put up in my room so that I can do interactive games and lessons with my students. Our school is ordering a few more, so I am waiting on that. Hopefully the more and more I get comfortable at using the different technology that is out, the better I will become at creating lessons to go along with it.

  1. Katie,

Do you only have one “Slate Board” for you entire class? Can your students prepare their information ahead of time, so that you can quickly change the information being projected onto the board? I have no knowledge of this particular tool, so I would like to know more about how it works. It sounds like an interesting way to have students share what they have created. I have not heard of a Mimio bar either. Is it a type of portable interactive board? It is great that you have a technology coordinator and media specialist to work with at your school. We, unfortunately, have neither at my site.

  2. Is the Mimio Bar like a Smart Board or Promethean Board? I use my Promethean Board whenever possible. I use prezi.com to post my morning work. I use flip charts to help model lessons. We just used it Friday for students to engage in a Jeopardy game to review for an upcoming test. The boards offer so much. They are also great for showing technology lessons before students venture to create their own products using our computer lab or lap tops in the classroom.

Mintzer, that must be tough not having tech support. I would be lost with no guidance or assistance. How do you get by, or are you very tech savvy already?

  3. Katie,
The 'mini smart boards' sound awesome! I teach in two different classrooms throughout the day and one of the rooms has a smart board... they are great! I really feel they engage the students in their note-taking, and also overall. When they are actively engaged in their learning, such as note-taking and responding to questions through the board, I feel they are learning more. Plus, it seems the students volunteer more when they know they get to write on the Smart board!

Also, I think you contacted two great people in your school! Last year, I used our Dean of Instruction and our Technology/Media teacher... the more help the better! I also believe it is most important to go to these people, because they are (normally) more than willing to share their equipment and ideas!

  4. Thanks for the posts!

gradrunner, the mimio bar is like a promethean board. It just takes templates that have been made and they become interactive with the kids. They kids love it. If we can't have smart boards, this is the next best thing.

    Mintzer,
Yes, we only have 1 slate for the whole classroom. The students can pass it to each other. For example. I do a lot of math problems with it. The students all have white boards while one student has the slate and completes the math problem for the whole class to see once they have already tried solving it themselves. It's great!
